Research compiled by the NHBC Foundation last year shows that the trend for multigenerational living is on the rise.
According to the report, 7% of UK households (that’s around 1.8 million) contain two or more adult generations – an increase of 38% between 2009 and 2014. The rise is attributed largely to the increasing number of adults aged over 25 who live with their parents, and who choose to live this way out of financial necessity.
However, the report also cited many other reasons why multigenerational living might be a lifestyle choice. These include combining resources to buy a larger property, help with childcare and the provision of care for older family members.
At the Bewley Homes Reading Gateway development, situated only 3.5 miles from the commercial centre of Reading, the four bedroom houses on offer are ideal for multigenerational living. Bewley Sales Manager, Brett Reeves, says: “Our 4 bedroom Windsor and Middleton house types offer versatile living arranged over three floors. The ground floor is a dedicated and practical living and entertaining space, featuring a kitchen/dining room, sitting room with direct access onto a garden and downstairs cloakroom.
“Upstairs, the first floor has two generous bedrooms with a family bathroom and the second floor features a master bedroom suite and bedroom 4, an arrangement which works perfectly for multigenerational living.
“If, for example a couple with young children has decided to move in with grandparents, they will select either the first or second floor for the needs of the parents and children and the other floor for the needs of the grandparents. Quite often this will enable the grandparents to have a bedroom and bathroom to themselves whilst also utilising one of the other bedrooms as a reception area/snug. This preserves privacy when required by each of the individual adult groups but equally means they can congregate together in the downstairs living space when desired.”
