  • Plan your firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.
  • Check with your local council to see if they have any additional rules about displays (by law, fireworks cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am – although on Guy Fawke’s Night (5 November), this deadline is extended to midnight.
  • Only buy fireworks which carry a CE mark.
  • Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.
  • It is advisable not to drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.
  • Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary.
  • Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.
  • Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.
  • Never return to a firework once it has been lit.
  • Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.
  • Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.
  • Always supervise children around fireworks.
  • Never give sparklers to children under five and light them one at a time, wearing gloves.
